Keynote Presentation:
Today’s World of Comedy with local comedian Jeff Applebaum
6:30pm
Do you like to laugh? Do people other than your mother find you funny? Why are there so many Jews in comedy? Have you eaten?
These are some of the questions that Comedian Jeff Applebaum will discuss as he talks about starting and working a career in standup comedy. He will also cover the world of comedy today and how it has changed in the last 50 years. Or has it? Oh - he might share some of his humor, too.
After 20+ years in California, this New York City native is finally learning to speak English. Jeff’s comedy examines his particular life experiences, which include being the only white kid on his Little League team in Queens, having a Chinese wife who orders from take-out menus in fluent Mandarin, and raising a teen son who calls himself “Jewnese,” because he says it sounds better than “Chine-ish.”
The Klezmakers
Performances at 3:50pm and 5:00pm
The Klezmakers make their “headquarters” in a Silicon Valley garage; when they rehearse, the neighbors sometimes stop to listen! Together, they create a joyous and heartfelt sound that echoes the Old World, while still making today's audiences get up and dance. Their repertoire encompasses Eastern European dances, Yiddish theater tunes, and traditional Israeli folk songs. The Klezmakers are: Tom Belick, clarinet; Kurt Conrad, bass; Rachel Garb, flute/piccolo; Bruce Kirschner, accordion; Elaine Moise, vocals/percussion; Daphna Rahmil, violin; Alan Rappoport, guitar.

Strangers No More
Academy Award winning documentary
Two screenings: 1:30pm and 3:50pm
In the heart of Tel Aviv, there is an exceptional school where children from forty-eight different countries and diverse backgrounds come together to learn. Many of the students arrive at Bialik-Rogozin School fleeing poverty, political adversity and even genocide. Here, no child is a stranger. Strangers No More follows several students’ struggle to acclimate to life in a new land while slowly opening up to share their stories of hardship and tragedy. With tremendous effort and dedication, the school provides the support these children need to recover from their past. Together, the bond between teacher and student, and amongst the students themselves, enables them to create new lives in this exceptional community.
A presentation by Lisa Alcalay Klug
Presentation at 3:50pm
Author of Cool Jew: the Ultimate Guide for Every Member of the Tribe
Whether you are a strongly identified Jew, more Jew-ISH, an Honorary Heeb, an ally, or a deprived Midwesterner who has never actually met a live one, celebrate all things Jewish with author Lisa Klug. Cool Jew: The Ultimate Guide for Every Member of the Tribe is a field manual for the 21st century Jew and the people who love them. Jew got questions? Jew got answers! Imagine an updated combination of the beloved Jewish Catalog meets the Joys of Yiddish with a hip-hop spin that captures the spirit of the times. A hallmark of the current Pan-Jewish cultural revival, Cool Jew does for matzah balls and gefilte fish what The Official Preppy Handbook did for plaid and polo, only with much more chutzpah!
